/!\ SAME-SEX COUPLES TORN APART Read Please.

  • Mood: On Strike
My anger is so deep and raw, I can't even start to express how I feel.

Please take a little of your time to read this til the end, and think about how you value your own Love Life.

If you are an American Citizen, and if you care a little about equality for all, Human Rights and family, you should know that every day, loving couples are living in fear of discrimination, humiliation and deportation.
You should know there are innocent lovers being torn apart in the worst manner, kept in detention, and treated as criminals.
Their crime? Loving each other unconditionally.
Some couples have to wait for years to be together, not getting to see each other at all, while some survive day to day, unable to plan a future, not knowing how long they'll get to stay together until they get caught and arrested.

This is not WWII.
It's the Land of the Free, today in 2007.
This is how your government would treat you if you ever happened to fall madly in love with a same-sex non-american citizen.
This gratuitous cruelty against genuinely commited human beings, who ask for nothing but the chance to live in peace with the one they love, is a dramatic Human Rights' violation.

Straight couples can be re-united, but same-sex can't.
People still don't realize that there is no difference.
Their love is the same as yours.
Picture yourself having to go through this with your Sweetheart. You probably can't even imagine being without them for a couple weeks... could you survive years of separation and unfair treatment from your own country?
How would you feel about being treated as a second-class citizen?
Would you be ready to leave everything you've known, home, family, friends, pets and live in exile in a far away country, if that was the only way you could be with your Missing Half?

They do. They fight, everyday. They put their life on hold for years, when only hope keeps them going, despite all the doors getting shut on their way to happiness.
A simple, fundamental, universal happiness, that so many take for granted.

But maybe there is hope now. It is called the UAFA (Uniting American Families Act). It is a bill that would allow same-sex couples to benefit the same immigration rights as married heterosexual couples.
It was defeated in the 108th congress, but was reintroduced on May 8, 2007 by New York Congressman Jerrold Nadler and Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy.
In the last 3 congresses it has been swept under the table and ultimately lost in committee and never came anywhere close to a vote. The same thing is going to happen again with UAFA, unless we get everyone's help with putting pressure on our leadership in Washington and telling everyone we know about the problems that face us.
The majority of Americans and GLBT community will never be affected by any of this, for those of us that are--the pain and suffering is real, and has continued for entirely too long.

It is essential for you, for me, for them, for all Americans that this bill passes.
19 countries around the world already grant their citizens, gay or straight, the right to be reunited with their Love, their family.

You can help.

Wow..not only is it deep. It's actually really true. And it's messed up how much has changed just because of the leading perspective. I think you've got a great point, and I hope it's heard by alot more to come.

Gaze at the sun, and you'll find pure light. Gaze at the moon, and you'll find light and darkness. Gaze upon the earth..and you'll see life.
Fantastic point!

I'll be awaring people of these cause.

May I call you teardrop ?

I think you have a point. The only thing I do not completely understand in your text, because I am not familiar with the US context, is in what way is it easier for "straight" couples ? Can marriage save you from all this hell and guarantee you a visa ?

In France for example (this is what I know), being legally married does not save you from all the unfair treatment. And that is, if you can get married in France, because weddings celebrated outside Europe would not be recognised. And if getting a visa is difficult, getting a job is worse.

If you are interested, there was a New York Times article on a recent French law introducing the principle that DNA records should be performed on foreign people wishing to bring their family to live with them in France. Just to keep track of potential criminals of course, no harm to private life or feelings. This is only for your security.

And from "straight" couples discrimation to same-sex couples discrimination is only 1 step. So I guess the battle really is a matter of tolerance towards all.

Anything you do, is you.
Thankyou for posting this. Not only is it really good to read and mind opening, but it will also help me a lot for a debate I'm going to be in. So maybe I can help spread the word. :)
